In 2008, when Google launched Street View for desktop browsers, it was a sensation. At last, you could see your neighborhood from the viewpoint of a Google van. But it was still a desktop phenomenon. The company didn’t even attempt a mobile version until 2011.
Google Street View is a great way to add an immersive experience to your website. You can use it to show off your business, give potential customers a tour of your products, or even just give people a virtual tour of your city.
To use it, click on the Google maps app to open, then on the search bar, type the location you want to go to or drop the pin icon to map.
Your location will appear, select the area, and now you can navigate to the street you choose with the arrow on the screen.
You can go forward or backward and zoom in on the photo.
What is Google Street View?
Google Street View is a technology featured in Google Maps and Google Earth
that provides interactive panoramas from positions along many streets worldwide.
It was launched in 2007 in several cities in the United States and has since expanded to include cities and rural areas worldwide.
Streets with imagery available are shown as blue lines on Google Maps.
It displays panoramas of stitched VR photographs interactively. Most photography is done by car, but some are done by tricycle, camel, boat, snowmobile, underwater apparatus, and on foot.
Street View had its inception in 2001 with the Stanford CityBlock Project, a Google-sponsored Stanford University research project. The project ended in June 2006, and its technology was folded into StreetView.
- 2007: Launched on May 25 in the United States using Immersive Media Company technology.
- 2008: In May, Google announced that it was testing face-blurring technology on its photos of the busy streets of Manhattan.
