The software is totally free. It is an open source program, and you can use it on windows, Linux and macOS.
The program is written mainly in Python 3 and has the peculiarity of using multiple GUI toolkits, all using the same core Python code.
On OS X, the UI layer is written in Objective-C and uses Cocoa. Linux & Windows, it’s written in Python and uses Qt5.
Many duplicate file finders are rather complex and packed with many different options. With dupeguru the only thing you must do is press the plus button and navigate to the section you want to scan.
Select the folder or entire disk you want to scan for duplicate files, and the program will start scanning. You can choose to search between music files, photos, and standard search.
It can scan either filenames or contents. The filename scan features a fuzzy matching algorithm that can find duplicate filenames even when they are not the same.
You can tweak its matching engine to find the kind of duplicates you want. The Preference page of the help file lists all the scanning engine settings you can change.
Once you’ve performed a search, you’ll see a list of duplicate files and can easily view previews of them and other information.
After the scan, you will see the number of duplicate files you have in the area you scanned.
